Accident – Death – Obituary News : Vaping Concerns Rise Amongst Young People in Jersey

Vaping amongst young people and children is becoming a growing concern in Jersey, according to the island’s director of public health, Peter Bradley. He emphasized the unknown risks associated with vaping, particularly for the younger population.

The government is now considering a ban on the sale of disposable vapes starting in 2025. This move, which has already been voted for in Guernsey, aims to eliminate single-use vapes from circulation. Deputy Steve Luce, Jersey’s Minister for the Environment, highlighted the importance of removing these products from the market to protect the health of young individuals.

While vaping may be a safer alternative for adults who smoke, the long-term effects on young people, including impacts on brain development and behavior, remain uncertain. The UK government’s previous plan to implement a ban on young people smoking and introduce a tax on vaping products was unsuccessful in Parliament.

Disposable vapes are particularly attractive to young people due to their affordability and colorful packaging. If the ban on disposable vapes is approved, it will be included in the Single Use Plastics Law. This legislation aims to promote re-use and recycling while addressing the health concerns associated with vaping.

Retailers in Jersey, such as Vape Jersey, are urged to be more vigilant in preventing the sale of disposable vapes to individuals under 18. Sarah Ward suggested that licensing for vape sellers should include strict regulations to prevent underage sales.

Aaron Want, the owner of St Peter’s vape shop, emphasized the importance of not allowing individuals under 18 into the store. In an effort to promote recycling, the shop offers customers a financial incentive for returning used vapes.

As discussions around vaping regulations continue, it is essential for all stakeholders to prioritize the health and well-being of young people in Jersey. By taking proactive measures to restrict access to harmful products and promote responsible practices within the vaping industry, the government and retailers can work together to create a safer environment for the community.
