According to police reports, the shooter arrived at the splash pad, parked his vehicle, and commenced firing from the base of the steps leading to the splash pad. He then proceeded to walk up the steps, reload his weapons, and continue his shooting spree from the top of the steps within the splash pad area.

In total, the assailant fired 28 shots indiscriminately into the crowded splash pad, using two handguns. Several victims sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to flee the scene, with the shooter fleeing before law enforcement arrived.

Police Response

An Oakland County sergeant swiftly responded to the incident within minutes of it being reported to 911. The department’s utilization of Live 911 technology enabled the sergeant to reach the splash pad within two minutes, where he administered aid to the injured individuals by applying tourniquets and providing support.

Victims of the Shooting

The nine victims, ranging in age from 4 to 78, bore the brunt of the gunman’s actions. One couple, Micayla and Eric Coughlin, shielded their children from harm but sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the process.

Another victim, a 39-year-old woman, along with her two sons, also fell prey to the shooter’s rampage, with the woman and one of her sons in critical condition.

Identity of the Shooter

The perpetrator, identified as 42-year-old Michael William Nash from Shelby Township, ultimately took his own life at a mobile home park in Shelby Township following the shooting. A handgun registered to Nash was recovered at the splash pad.
