After more than forty years of uncertainty, a missing mother has finally been identified by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in California. The remains, initially discovered by children playing in a Lake Forest culvert in 1983, have been confirmed to belong to Maritza Glean Grimmett, according to a June 14 news release.

Following the discovery of the skull by the children, a significant portion of the woman’s remains was recovered during excavation efforts. An anthropologist determined that the woman was between 18 to 24 years old, stood between 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a distinctive gold tooth.

Despite previous attempts to identify the woman, her identity remained a mystery until 2022 when investigators turned to forensic genetic genealogy. This innovative approach combines DNA testing with traditional genealogical methods to create family history profiles, allowing researchers to determine biological relationships.

By collaborating with Othram Inc., a forensic genetic genealogy company, a comprehensive DNA profile was created for the unknown woman. The FBI’s forensic genetic genealogy team then utilized this profile to generate new investigative leads, leading deputies to a distant relative in late 2023.

Approximately a month after sharing the forensic sketches of the woman on a Facebook group for Jane Does and missing women from the 1970s and 1980s, a woman came forward believing the woman could be her missing mother. Through DNA testing, deputies confirmed the remains to be those of Grimmett.

Grimmett, originally from Panama, was married to a United States Marine in the summer of 1978 and had a daughter. The family relocated to the United States later that year, residing in Columbus, Ohio, and Millington, Tennessee. Following the start of divorce proceedings about a year into their marriage, Grimmett informed her sister of her intention to travel to California, never to be heard from again.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is currently actively investigating Grimmett’s homicide. Anyone with information is urged to contact deputies at 714-647-7045 or email coldcase@ocsheriff.gov.

Lake Forest, where the remains were found, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Los Angeles.
