The individual involved in the crash has been identified as Lambert Trejo, a 67-year-old resident of Williston, North Dakota. Trejo is facing serious charges including homicide by vehicle, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, open container in vehicle, and driving while license suspended.
Details of the Incident
The New Mexico State Police responded to a report of a collision near mile marker 378 on Interstate 25 at around 3 p.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered a single-vehicle accident with extensive damage, indicating that the vehicle had rolled over.
At the scene, officers found Trejo and his wife, 63-year-old Daina Rapper, who was tragically pronounced dead. The couple was reportedly returning to North Dakota from Albuquerque when the accident occurred.
Trejo admitted to consuming alcohol while driving, specifically mentioning that he had drunk a miniature bottle of Fireball Whiskey. He confessed to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to the crash. Empty bottles of alcohol were found inside the vehicle, further supporting the claim.
Police noted that Trejo exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes. He struggled to provide basic information about his wife when questioned, demonstrating impairment.
Legal Proceedings
Authorities attempted to conduct a field sobriety test on Trejo, but his condition prevented them from doing so. He was subsequently taken to Alta Vista Regional Hospital for a blood draw before being transferred to the San Miguel County Detention Center, where he is currently detained.
As of now, no court dates have been scheduled for the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
