Woman in Kansas pleads guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death of her son
SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman in Kansas has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the shooting death of her 14-year-old son, following a standoff with police at her apartment.
Kylee Hodges, aged 43 and from Wichita, entered the plea on Thursday, as confirmed by The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
The tragic incident unfolded on January 28, when police responded to a concern raised by the boy’s father regarding his welfare at an apartment on W. Central in Wichita.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a bullet hole in the apartment’s exterior wall and a discharged bullet near the entrance, prompting them to enter the property to investigate further.
Inside, they encountered Kylee Hodges holding a handgun, with a shotgun also found nearby. Negotiations ensued, with a tactical team eventually being called to the scene to assist in resolving the situation.
After hours of discussions, Hodges briefly exited the apartment at the request of negotiators but later retrieved the handgun and advanced towards officers, resulting in her being shot by SWAT team members.
Tragically, upon re-entering the apartment, officers discovered the lifeless body of the teenage victim in a bedroom.
Hodges was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Center. Her sentencing is scheduled for next month, according to the district attorney’s office.
