BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – A man has been taken into custody for driving under the influence following a collision in Bowling Green.
In the early hours of Monday morning, Bowling Green police were called to the scene of an accident on Louisville Road at Interstate Drive. It was reported that a vehicle had collided with a metal light pole and an electrical box, as stated in the arrest citation.
The driver, identified as 32-year-old Juan Garcia, was noted to have a strong smell of alcohol by the responding officers. Garcia admitted to consuming several alcoholic drinks before getting behind the wheel.
According to Garcia, another vehicle encroached into his lane, prompting him to swerve to the right in an attempt to avoid a crash. Unfortunately, his vehicle made contact with the pole as a result.
A passenger who was trapped inside the vehicle suffered serious injuries, as confirmed by EMS personnel on site. The injured individual was promptly airlifted to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville for advanced medical care. The extent of Garcia’s injuries, if any, remains unclear.
Following a background check run by BGPD dispatch, it was revealed that Garcia did not possess a valid driver’s licence or insurance for the vehicle at the time of the incident. Additionally, Garcia was not the registered owner of the vehicle that sustained significant damage. Authorities noted that Garcia was also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Both the pole and the vehicle are estimated to have incurred damages exceeding £1000, according to the citation.
Garcia now faces multiple charges, including operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree assault, operating a motor vehicle without a licence, failure of a non-owner operator to maintain required insurance, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
