NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard Point Judith assisted Narragansett Police Department, along with Rhode Island Department Environmental Management (DEM) to apprehend a fugitive.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old John Avarista from Cranston, was sought after for various offences in both Connecticut and Rhode Island, totaling seven warrants for his arrest.

Avarista is alleged to have been involved in domestic violence incidents and assault cases.

His capture took place on Sunday when he was discovered aboard a fishing vessel in Narragansett.

According to a statement from the coast guard, the suspect became aware that law enforcement was awaiting his return to the fishing vessel’s home port in Galilee, prompting him to divert to a nearby dock in an attempt to evade arrest.

Both maritime and land-based law enforcement teams noticed the change in the fishing vessel’s docking location and swiftly coordinated to intercept the vessel near Great Island Road in Narragansett, as per the release.

The collaborative efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, Narragansett Police Department, and Rhode Island DEM resulted in the successful arrest of John Avarista, a fugitive with a history of criminal activity across state lines.
