Authorities have identified the woman who was fatally shot by police in Panorama City after allegedly charging at officers with a knife. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning at an apartment complex on Van Nuys Boulevard.
Details of the Deadly Confrontation
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call about a suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Joanna Lua, who was armed with a knife and threatening family members inside the apartment. Lua was reportedly attempting to assault family members with the knife and preventing them from leaving the premises.
Upon arrival, officers staged outside the apartment’s front door and attempted to communicate with the occupants inside. After hearing screams and loud banging from within the apartment, officers forced entry and encountered Lua advancing towards them with the knife.
Despite verbal commands to drop the weapon, Lua continued to approach the officers, prompting an Officer-Involved Shooting. She was struck by gunfire and TASER probes before being taken into custody. Lua was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Recovery of Evidence
At the scene, a black-handled, 10-inch bread knife was recovered and booked as evidence. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
Civil Rights Concerns
Following the shooting, civil rights leader Earl Ofari Hutchinson called for a swift investigation into the officers involved. Hutchinson raised concerns about the LAPD’s use of deadly force in situations that may not pose a significant threat to officers or others.
District Attorney George Gascón has been urged to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if the use of force was justified in this case. The LAPD’s Mission Division is currently conducting its own investigation into the incident.
