Human remains identified as missing ex-girlfriend in former home of convicted man
Authorities in Johnstown, Pennsylvania have confirmed that the human remains found in the old home of a man recently convicted in the killing of his wife have been positively identified as those of his missing ex-girlfriend. The Cambria County Coroner, Jeff Lees, revealed last week that the remains belong to Jilly Todaro, who had been missing for some time.
Identification Process
According to Lees, the identification of Todaro’s remains was made possible through body imaging conducted by a forensic odontologist and anthropologist. While details of the cause of death were not disclosed, Lees described it as a result of “homicidal violence.”
Connection to Conviction
The discovery of Todaro’s remains came shortly after the conviction of 48-year-old Brian Giles, who was found guilty in the slaying of his wife, Nancy Giles. Nancy had gone missing in October 2018, and her remains were later uncovered in May 2019 near a trail on the Inclined Plane hillside in downtown Johnstown.
Relationship with Accused
Todaro, who was Giles’ girlfriend following the disappearance of his wife, also resided in the same home where the remains were found. She went missing in December 2020, prompting District Attorney Greg Neugebauer to hint at potential charges being filed in connection to her death in the near future.
Legal Response
Brian Giles’ defense attorney, Timothy Burns, refrained from commenting on the discovery of the remains until their identification. During the trial for Nancy Giles’ murder, Burns had cited his client’s mental health struggles and expressed disappointment in the verdict. Giles himself maintained his innocence as he was escorted from the courtroom.
Prosecution’s Perspective
Neugebauer explained that the search of the residence following Brian Giles’ conviction was prompted by new information pointing to the location of a body. The discovery of Todaro’s remains bolstered the prosecution’s case significantly, according to Neugebauer, who noted that she had been deceased for a considerable period.
Family Reaction
Relatives of Jilly Todaro, who was 43 at the time of her disappearance, expressed gratitude for the closure brought by the discovery of her remains. They are now able to begin the healing process and come to terms with their loss, said Coroner Lees.
Final Thoughts
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Aurandt expressed a wish that Todaro could have seen the support and effort put forth by the community to ensure her remains were found and treated with respect. Aurandt highlighted the care and compassion shown by many towards Todaro, underscoring the impact of her tragic fate.
