Accident – Death – Obituary News : An incarcerated individual in Georgia tragically shot a prison staff member before taking their own life, as confirmed by officials from the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC). The distressing incident occurred at Smith State Prison in Glennville on Sunday. The perpetrator, identified as Jaydrekus Hart, was serving time for voluntary manslaughter.
The victim, Aureon Shavea Grace, was on duty in the prison’s kitchen when the shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. Hart, the assailant, fatally shot the 24-year-old woman before turning the gun on himself. Grace was pronounced dead at the scene, while Hart was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later declared deceased.
“The inmate turned the gun on himself and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” the GDC elaborated. The department is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the murder-suicide. At the time of the tragic incident, Hart was only at the beginning of a 20-year sentence with a scheduled release date set for June 2043.
Authorities are still determining how Hart managed to obtain the firearm while incarcerated. The weapon is now in GDC custody, and the department’s Special Agents are providing additional staffing support to the facility during this challenging time.
“We will be providing updates as soon as more details are available and confirmed,” the GDC assured. Despite inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the firearm acquisition, GDC officials have not yet provided a response.
