Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On Sunday, June 16, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded in General Santos City, Philippines, as six individuals, including three children, lost their lives in a fatal collision. The tragedy occurred following a Father’s Day celebration at a local beach, turning a day of joy into one of sorrow.

The fatal collision took place when a tricycle, carrying the victims, collided with a truck on a highway. It is important to note that traffic laws strictly prohibit tricycles from travelling along highways, due to safety concerns.

The impact of the collision was devastating, with five of the victims, including one-year-old Lathicia Enan and 11-year-old Jeremy Culanan, tragically losing their lives immediately. Additionally, six-year-old Zowie Cañedo succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.

The other fatalities were identified as 32-year-old Jay Cañedo, the tricycle driver, and 28-year-olds Rosilene Pajaro and Marivic Enan.

The tragic incident unfolded as the tricycle, filled with minors returning from a beach outing to mark Father’s Day, collided with the truck on a highway in Cabu, Barangay Tambler.

Four other children, aged between seven and 13, sustained serious injuries in the collision and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

The driver of the truck has been taken into police custody pending a thorough investigation. Initial reports suggest that the tricycle driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Authorities have issued a reminder of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) directive, urging local governments and police to enforce the prohibition of tricycles on highways to prevent such tragic accidents.

Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of strict enforcement of this rule, highlighting the need for stronger measures to ensure road safety in the region.

Enforcement challenges have also come to light following this incident, with the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (HPG) in Soccsksargen facing obstacles due to a lack of deputization from the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

HPG in the Soccsksargen region, covering several provinces and cities, lacks the legal authority to apprehend traffic violators without the required deputization order from the LTO.

Efforts are underway to address these issues and renew the deputization order of the HPG in Soccsksargen, ensuring enhanced road safety measures and enforcement in the region.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time. May their souls rest in peace.
