Jasvir Kaur : Carteret NJ Murder Suspect Arrested with Handgun: Court Papers

CARTERET – Following a daylong manhunt, police apprehended a Washington state man who was responsible for fatally shooting one woman and critically injuring another in Carteret. The suspect, identified as Gaurav Gill, 19, was found armed with a 9mm handgun and an extended magazine with bullets, for which he did not have a permit, according to court documents.

Court papers revealed that when Gill was searched after his arrest, a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun was discovered in his waistband, along with an extended magazine containing 9mm rounds in his front pocket. The criminal complaint stated that Gill did not possess a permit to carry the weapon.

Gill has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses in connection with the Wednesday morning shooting on Roosevelt Avenue in West Carteret. The incident resulted in the death of Jasvir Kaur, a 29-year-old Carteret woman, while a 20-year-old Carteret woman remains in critical condition at the hospital, as per the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The criminal complaint indicated that Kaur suffered multiple gunshot wounds from a handgun, while the other woman sustained at least one gunshot wound.

According to court documents, Carteret police responded to Roosevelt Avenue on June 12 following a report of two females being shot. The victims were taken to separate hospitals, and one of them was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Surveillance footage from the area captured a man wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers fleeing the scene after the shooting, as detailed in court papers.

Further investigation revealed footage of the same individual handling a firearm that discharged a 9mm round, which was subsequently recovered. The round matched the caliber of the bullet found at the crime scene, according to court records.

The surveillance also captured the suspect discarding the black hoodie, revealing a white T-shirt underneath, and leaving the hoodie on the ground. Additional footage showed the same man fleeing the area in the same attire, now with a decal visible on the front of the white T-shirt, as per court documents.

During the search of the area, police received a tip that a man resembling the shooter was seen in a resident’s backyard. Officers responded to the location and found the suspect wearing black pants, white sneakers, and a white T-shirt with a decal, leading to his arrest, as outlined in court documents.

A Ring camera video depicting the suspect’s arrest, shared on a Carteret public Facebook page, showed the man standing in a yard with his hands in the air near a green and white striped fence. Police instructed him not to move, and he was eventually handcuffed while lying face down on the grass, with an officer heard saying “we got him.”
