A suspect has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 54-year-old woman who tragically lost her life in a fire that was deliberately started in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:21 a.m. on Saturday, when an individual reportedly threw an incendiary device through the window of an apartment located in the 3100-block of South Green Street, as per the Chicago Police Department.
The victim, identified as 54-year-old Charnette Walker by the Cook County Medical Examiner, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Additionally, a 12-year-old girl sustained injuries in the fire and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.
Cordale Nichols, aged 37, has been formally charged with two counts of felony murder, one count of attempted murder, one felony count of arson, and has also been cited for an annual gun offender registration, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect was apprehended around 45 minutes after the arson attack in the 2900-block of South Halsted. The motive behind the incident remains unclear at this time, and it is yet to be determined whether there was any prior connection between the perpetrator and the victims.
