COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A devastating incident unfolded in southwest Columbus on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old pregnant woman and the arrest of a 23-year-old man following a domestic altercation.
The Columbus police received a distressing text message at 7:30 a.m. alerting them to a domestic violence incident in the vicinity of the 4600 block of Parkwick Drive. The message, sent by a concerned individual, detailed an assault on Brooke Devinney by her boyfriend, identified as Devon Blair in court records.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Devinney inside the residence. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but tragically succumbed to her injuries at 8:45 a.m. Shockingly, Devinney was pregnant at the time of her death, and her unborn child was also pronounced dead at 8:49 a.m.
Police Efforts and Arrest
As officers descended on the scene, Blair was spotted exiting the property. A pursuit ensued on foot, but Blair managed to evade capture briefly. However, he was eventually apprehended just before 12:30 p.m. near Cottrell Drive and Cottrell Court.
Blair’s history revealed a troubling pattern, as he had been arrested in December 2023 on charges of felonious assault, assault, domestic violence, and strangulation or suffocation. Despite pleading guilty to some charges in May, he found himself back in custody for violating bond conditions.
Previous Incidents and Ongoing Issue
Prior to this fatal incident, Devinney had lodged a report against Blair on June 13, stemming from an altercation where Blair allegedly assaulted and threatened her while they were driving. The report also detailed previous instances of violence, including a disturbing incident where Blair reportedly stabbed Devinney.
Sgt. Joe Albert of the Columbus Police highlighted the recurring nature of domestic violence offences, emphasizing the importance of victim cooperation to address this pervasive issue. Blair currently remains incarcerated at Franklin County Jail, facing a murder charge alongside multiple assault and domestic violence charges.
