FRANKLIN CO., Va. (WDBJ) – Virginia State Police are currently conducting an investigation into a devastating two-vehicle collision that resulted in a fatality on Saturday afternoon in Franklin County.
The incident took place around 3:45 p.m. on Route 122, just north of Route 950, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Initial reports suggest that a 2014 Chrysler 200 was travelling northbound on Route 122 when it inexplicably veered into the southbound lane, resulting in a tragic head-on collision with a 2016 Toyota Tundra.
The driver of the Chrysler has been identified as 26-year-old Austin Lee Lawhorn, hailing from Moneta, Va. Despite being properly restrained with a seatbelt, Mr. Lawhorn tragically lost his life in the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Toyota was being driven by a 38-year-old female, accompanied by two 12-year-old juvenile passengers, all of whom were also wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Fortunately, their injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and they were promptly taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, Virginia State Police are diligently working to uncover the underlying factors that led to the fatal collision on Route 122.
