Aron Lara : Suspect Charged in Deadly BBQ Shooting

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities in Wichita are investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Father’s Day, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect.

According to Police spokesman Andrew Ford, the incident took place just after 8:30 p.m. on Sunday in the 1900 block of N. Jackson Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers were met with gunfire in the background, prompting an immediate response.

The victim, identified as Aron Lara, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital by Sedgwick County EMS. Despite undergoing surgery, Lara tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m.

Another individual, a 22-year-old man, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm and was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment. He is currently in stable condition.

The shooting took place during a neighbourhood barbecue celebrating Father’s Day. Reports suggest that Lara was involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect earlier in the evening. The suspect allegedly retrieved a rifle from his residence and opened fire on Lara, who was unarmed at the time.

It is believed that two men accompanying Lara returned fire, resulting in the injury of the second victim. The identities of these individuals are still being investigated by the police.

The Wichita Police Department arrested the 33-year-old suspect on charges of first-degree murder. The suspect’s name has not been released to the public.

During the investigation, officers recovered the murder weapon from a nearby property. Additionally, 26 firearm casings of various calibers were collected from different homes and vehicles in the vicinity, indicating the intensity of the exchange of gunfire.
