KOTA KINABALU: A tragic incident unfolded in the serene waters of the Kampung Pitas Bombalai River in Tawau on Sunday (June 16) afternoon, as a man was found drowned after going missing while fishing.

The victim, identified as Arippin Daud, aged 49, had set out for a morning fishing expedition at 6am. However, concern arose among villagers when his boat was discovered unmanned at 11am.

Authorities were alerted to the situation when a distress call was made to the Tawau Fire and Rescue Services Station at 2.06pm. A team of five men was swiftly dispatched to conduct a search and rescue operation.

Search and Rescue Operation

Tawau Fire and Rescue Services Station chief, Jemishin Ujin, detailed that upon arrival at the scene, the team, in collaboration with the police, initiated a search operation utilizing the ‘surface water rescue’ technique.

After an intense search effort, the victim was eventually discovered by villagers near his boat at 3.53pm. Tragically, he was confirmed deceased by the police.

Postmortem and Conclusion of Operation

Jemishin Ujin further mentioned that the victim’s body was subsequently handed over to the police and transported to the hospital for a postmortem examination.

Following the necessary procedures, the fire department conducted a final inspection at the scene before concluding the operation at 3.55pm.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise during recreational activities such as fishing. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Arippin Daud during this difficult time.
