A Florida man, Anthony Scalici, 41, hailing from Boynton Beach, has been indicted in a shocking 15-year-old cold case murder involving the tragic death of his uncle, Rosario Prestigiacomo, in New York City. The grand jury in Queens has charged Scalici with second-degree murder in connection to the case that had gone cold for over a decade.

The breakthrough in this cold case came through advancements in DNA technology and a discarded plastic fork. Rosario Prestigiacomo, 64, was found stabbed to death in his Queens home back in February 2009, sparking an intense investigation that failed to yield any leads until now.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, “This indictment serves as a reminder that the passage of time does not diminish our commitment to seeking justice for victims. We hope that this development brings some measure of closure to the family of Rosario Prestigiacomo.”

Early on in the investigation, Scalici was identified as a suspect, but there was insufficient evidence to charge him. However, in a recent turn of events, detectives from the NYPD and the Boynton Beach Police Department were able to surveil Scalici and retrieve a discarded plastic fork that ultimately linked him to the crime scene through DNA evidence.

Power of DNA Technology in Solving Cold Cases

The match between the DNA on the fork discarded by Scalici in Florida and the DNA found at the crime scene was made possible by the use of public genealogy databases and cutting-edge DNA technology. Scalici was arrested in May, extradited to New York, and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is currently being held without bail.

This case underscores the power of DNA technology and the unwavering dedication of law enforcement in pursuing justice for victims of violent crimes. It also sends a strong message to criminals that they can never truly escape the consequences of their actions.
