The incident took place around 9:20 p.m. near the intersection of 27th Avenue and Beardsley Road. Upon receiving a distress call, law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene and took control of the situation, detaining a man who was armed with a gun.
Subsequently, the victim, identified as 32-year-old Alejandro Samplina, was discovered lying on the ground in the parking lot. Samplina was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Argument Over Parking Turns Deadly
According to the police report, the altercation between Samplina and the shooter was sparked by a dispute over parking. The situation quickly escalated when Samplina brandished a knife and began chasing the other individual around his vehicle.
As the tension mounted, the man retrieved a firearm from his car. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, he fired his gun at Samplina, ultimately striking him.
Self-Defense Claim Supported by Evidence
Following the incident, detectives conducted a thorough investigation and interviewed the shooter, who maintained that he had acted in self-defense. The police corroborated this assertion, citing witness testimonies and surveillance footage that aligned with the shooter’s account of events.
Consequently, the man was released from custody pending further legal proceedings. Phoenix police have indicated that they will be submitting charges to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review.
