Authorities in Ondo State have tragically confirmed the death of an 86-year-old woman who was set ablaze by her own daughter in Ondo City. The victim, affectionately known as Iya Biodun, succumbed to her injuries at the trauma centre of the School of Medical Sciences in Ondo, where she was rushed for medical attention.
The harrowing incident took place at Surulere, opposite the Anglican Cathedral Church in the Ondo West local government area. The perpetrator, identified as Abiodun, 45, reportedly carried out the heinous act at around 5 a.m. while her mother was asleep.
Shocking details emerged as Abiodun confessed to police officers, stating, “I lured my mother out of the house early in the morning and set her on fire because I believed she was the cause of all my problems.” The suspect claimed that she had been convinced that the only way to escape her life’s turmoil was by taking her mother’s life.
According to Abiodun, her life had been plagued by numerous challenges until a prophet alleged that her mother was the root cause of her misfortunes. Subsequently, she took matters into her own hands and carried out the horrific act, as witnessed by Sola Oladele, who saw Abiodun pouring petrol on her mother before igniting the flames.
Although the motive behind the tragic incident remains unclear, the suspect has been apprehended by the Enu-Owa division of the police for further investigation. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, expressed sorrow over the incident and confirmed that the suspect will face legal proceedings at the earliest opportunity.
