ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) — Tragedy struck the Elkins Police Department as a member of the force was discovered on Friday with a fatal gunshot wound off of U.S. 33 east of Elkins.
Investigation Details
Responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle with a shot-out window, deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene near Eagles Nest Road at approximately 11:36 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a victim with an “apparent gunshot wound,” later identified as an unnamed member of the Elkins Police Department.
Media Coverage
News of the incident reached 12 News on Friday afternoon, prompting a team of reporters to investigate further. The scene was swarmed with law enforcement officers and multiple ambulances surrounding a civilian sedan. While the reporters were unable to interview officials, they witnessed a solemn procession of Elkins police cruisers and other agencies escorting the ambulances to Davis Medical Center.

Following the tragic event, numerous agencies and entities from the region extended their support to the City of Elkins and the Elkins Police Department. Among those offering condolences were the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Buckhannon, and the Parsons Police Department.
The circumstances surrounding the officer’s death were not disclosed in the release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
