A man from Malden, Massachusetts, is facing multiple charges after Boston police revealed that he was involved in a robbery where he impersonated a police officer to steal nearly $250,000 earlier this month. Timothy Deconinck, 55, was apprehended on a warrant in connection with the incident that took place on June 7 in East Boston, as announced by the Boston Police Department on Sunday.

On the morning of June 7, the owner of an East Boston check cashing business reported to the police that he had withdrawn $240,000 in cash from Berkshire Bank near Fenway Park earlier that day. Upon arriving at his place of business at 230 Meridian St., the man was approached by two individuals who claimed to be police officers and stated they had a warrant for his arrest. One of the men forcibly removed the man from his car, and both men drove away in the vehicle, leaving the victim stranded.

Describing the incident, the victim recounted, “A guy banged on my window. He said: ‘There’s a warrant out for your arrest.’ He opened the door, he grabbed me by the back of the neck, and he threw me down to the side. Next thing I know, he jumped in the car.” The victim’s black Audi A6 was discovered about 100 yards away with an empty money bag, along with an additional $1,100 in cash that was left in his wallet inside the car.

Arrest in Attempted Break-in

On Saturday at around 1:20 p.m., Boston police responded to a breaking and entering in progress at an apartment building located at 212 Waldemar Ave. in East Boston. A 911 call alerted the authorities to two men attempting to gain entry into an apartment using power tools.

Timothy Deconinck was identified as one of the individuals involved in the attempted break-in at the Waldemar Avenue apartment. Upon locating him, officers found him in possession of a drill, drill bits, and other tools, leading to his arrest. Deconinck is set to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on charges including unarmed robbery of a person over 65, carjacking, and impersonating a police officer.

Furthermore, Deconinck faces additional charges of possession of burglarious tools, attempted breaking and entering, defacing property, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest in connection with the Waldemar Avenue incident on Saturday.

Second Suspect Apprehended

Alongside Deconinck, the police also arrested a second suspect involved in the attempted break-in. The individual, identified as 59-year-old William Cataldo from Saugus, is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court on charges of possession of burglarious tools, attempted breaking and entering, defacing property, and resisting arrest.

The Boston Police Department confirmed that the second suspect linked to the Meridian Street carjacking and robbery is still at large, with investigations ongoing to locate and apprehend the individual.
