Police in Pune have apprehended a couple for their involvement in a series of vehicle thefts across the city. The suspects, identified as Shahrukh Raju Pathan (24) and Pooja Jaydev Madanlal (21), hail from Nira, Baramati.
The duo is accused of carrying out numerous thefts of both four-wheeler and two-wheeler vehicles in Pune. The Sinhagad Road Police Station’s investigation team was alerted to the pair’s activities and launched a thorough investigation into their criminal enterprise.
Following a tip-off on June 7, 2024, the police set up a sting operation at the Ghat section area and successfully apprehended Pathan and Madanlal while they were seated in a Hyundai Xcent car. Subsequent interrogation revealed that the couple had stolen a total of 17 vehicles, valued at ₹12,7000.
Arrest and Seizure
During questioning, the suspects admitted to their crimes and provided information on the stolen vehicles. Police managed to recover 8 four-wheelers and 9 two-wheelers from various manufacturers. In addition to the vehicles, authorities also confiscated multiple keys, a knife, and scissors that were allegedly used in the thefts.
Police Sub-Inspector Santosh Bhandwalkar of Sinhagad police station shed light on the couple’s modus operandi, stating, “Both the accused lacked a permanent residence in Pune and would stay at lodges in different parts of the city. They meticulously surveyed potential targets during the day and carried out their thefts under the cover of night. Pathan, with his background as a garage mechanic, possessed the necessary skills to create duplicate keys, enabling them to steal the vehicles effortlessly.”
History of Criminal Activities
Bhandwalkar elaborated on the couple’s criminal history, revealing that they had been previously incarcerated for similar offences. Between mid-2021 and 2024, the duo was implicated in 14 cases across various police jurisdictions. After their release in early February 2024, they resumed their illegal activities and managed to steal 17 vehicles from locations including Sinhagad, Bharti Vidyapeeth, Kondhwa, Hadapsar, Koregaon Park, Samarth, Wanawadi, Bibwewadi, and Nagpur.
Despite being married for a few years and having a young child, the couple persisted in their criminal activities. They primarily targeted specific vehicle models such as Maruti Suzuki Eco, Hyundai Xcent, and Scorpio due to their familiarity with these models. The stolen two-wheelers were sold in Nagpur, Shirdi, and Srirampur at discounted rates.
The police have vowed to crack down on such criminal activities and ensure that the perpetrators face the full extent of the law.
