A tragic incident unfolded in Tampa on Saturday night as a Florida teen, Christos Alexander Themelis Jr., 19, was involved in a deadly shootout that resulted in the deaths of his parents and injuries to a deputy from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a call from Rebecca Ann Themelis, 48, who reported that her husband, Christos Byron Themelis, 51, had been shot. During the call, more shots were fired, escalating the situation.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found the suspect, Christos Alexander Themelis Jr., along with his mother Rebecca Themelis outside the home. The suspect then proceeded to fatally shoot his mother in the back of the head and opened fire on law enforcement officers, injuring one deputy in the leg.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said his department is investigating how a “mentally unfit” teenager gained access to guns that he used to kill his parents and injure a deputy. (The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office)

The teen then barricaded himself inside the home and eventually succumbed to his injuries. Sheriff Chad Chronister confirmed that the injured deputy was in stable condition.

Chronister expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “The monster we encountered this evening is responsible for not only injuring our deputy but also killing his own mother and father. Our deputies responded to a chaotic scene and immediately put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community. Without our deputy’s quick and skillful response, an entire neighborhood would have been in danger.”

As the investigation continues, it was revealed that deputies had been called to the home 10 times prior to the deadly incident, mainly for mental health-related issues and violence towards the suspect’s parents.

Additionally, there was an active risk protection order against the 19-year-old, leading deputies to seize his guns. Authorities are now looking into how the suspect obtained the firearm used in the fatal shooting, especially given his mental health status.

Chronister emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “We don’t know exactly, and we may not ever know why he became as violent as he did. But we do know, inflicting injury or harm on another human being, it never matters what the reason is, it’s never OK. Period.”

The tragic events of that night serve as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for measures to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
