Three vessels allegedly carrying 330,000 litres of illegal diesel that disappeared from a police pier in Chon Buri last week are now believed to be near Malaysian waters, as per the latest information from Thai police.

Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, Pol Maj Gen Charoonkiat Pankaew, revealed on Sunday that the missing boats had initially travelled into Cambodian and Vietnamese waters before eventually being located off the coast of southern Thailand.

Efforts are underway to track down the vessels, with Thai police working closely with authorities in neighbouring countries to persuade those onboard to surrender. Pol Maj Gen Charoonkiat expressed optimism about the situation, stating that cooperation from all sides has been positive.

Emphasising the gravity of the situation, Pol Maj Gen Charoonkiat confirmed that the police officers responsible for the disappearance of the seized vessels would face charges for negligence and causing significant damage to the government.

Marine Police Commander, Pol Maj Gen Pritthipong Nuchanart, asserted that his unit was actively involved in the case. While initial reports suggested the vessels had entered Cambodian waters, subsequent information indicated they were still in international waters near Malaysia.

According to Pol Maj Gen Pritthipong, the contraband oil onboard the missing vessels is valued at approximately 3 million baht in total, equating to roughly 10-12 baht per litre. Despite the significant quantity of oil, he believes it unlikely that the perpetrators would unload the cargo onto other vessels, given the vessels themselves are estimated to be worth around 5 million baht each.

The incident came to light last week when the local marine police station in Sattahip reported that three of the five confiscated fishing boats had vanished. The missing vessels were identified as J.P., Seahorse, and Daorung, each carrying a substantial amount of untaxed oil.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on locating the missing vessels and holding those responsible for their disappearance accountable.
