(KRON) — A teenager was apprehended for perpetrating a hate crime against a victim who was engaged in prayer in San Bruno on Saturday afternoon, as reported by the San Bruno Police Department.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 2:40 p.m., when they received a distress call regarding a victim being menaced with a knife in a shopping centre parking lot on El Camino Real. The victim recounted to law enforcement officials that he was praying outside his vehicle when the perpetrator approached him and brandished a knife.
The suspect reportedly issued death threats towards the victim and made derogatory comments regarding the victim’s perceived ethnicity. The victim self-identified as “Middle Eastern / Afghan” when speaking to SBPD, according to police reports.
Following the altercation, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving the victim physically unharmed.
Shortly thereafter, authorities managed to locate and detain the suspect in his vehicle. The individual in question is a 17-year-old believed to share a Middle Eastern heritage, as per SBPD statements.
The teenager was taken into custody on charges related to committing a hate crime, wielding a deadly weapon, and making criminal threats, before being remanded to the Hillcrest Juvenile Detention Center in San Mateo County.
