Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed that 9 people were injured in the attack, with some in critical condition. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Michael William Nash, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Shelby Township home.
Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the senseless shooting, as Bouchard stated that the suspect had no connection to the victims and did not reside in Rochester Hills. A total of 28 shots were fired, and authorities recovered a 9mm Glock handgun along with three magazines at the scene.
Police responded swiftly to the chaotic scene, arriving within two minutes of the initial call for help. However, the suspect had already fled the area, leaving behind a trail of devastation and confusion. Witnesses described a scene of panic and horror, with people scrambling to safety as bullets flew through the air.
The victims of the tragic incident at the splash pad included an 8-year-old boy in critical condition with a head wound, a 4-year-old boy stable with a thigh injury, and a 39-year-old woman in critical condition with abdominal and leg wounds. The three individuals are members of the same family, with the eldest victim being a 78-year-old man who sustained injuries but is currently in stable condition.
Additional victims suffered various injuries but are now in stable condition, with most being in their thirties. Among the injured are a mother and two children, as well as a husband and wife. Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett confirmed that one of the victims is the spouse of a city employee.
The suspect, Michael William Nash, was described by police as a 42-year-old white male who lived with his mother. While Nash had no prior criminal record, authorities believe he may have struggled with mental health challenges. Following the attack, Nash took his own life at the Shelby Township home where he was contained for several hours.
