A 42-year-old man, Michael William Nash, who lived with his mother, has been identified as the suspected shooter at the Rochester splash pad that left eight people injured, according to police reports.
Nash opened fire at the park located in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills, Michigan, authorities confirmed. He has been described as a white male with no prior criminal record, but authorities suspect he may have had underlying mental health issues, as stated by Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in an interview with the Detroit Free Press.
Despite the absence of any direct connection to the victims, Nash’s motive remains under investigation by law enforcement officials. Tragically, the incident culminated in Nash taking his own life at his residence in Shelby Township after being contained by police for several hours.
The victims of the shooting include an eight-year-old child who is in critical condition, his mother who is also critically injured, and his four-year-old brother who is in stable condition. Additionally, other victims, all over the age of 30, include a husband and wife as well as a 78-year-old man.
The shooting occurred on a Saturday evening when Nash drove to the park, approached the splash pad area, and commenced firing multiple rounds, reloading his weapon several times. Witnesses reported Nash using two handguns during the attack, though law enforcement has not yet confirmed this detail.
Following the incident, first responders provided immediate medical assistance to the injured victims, implementing tourniquets to control bleeding. Subsequently, police located Nash’s residence where they found him deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement’s swift response in identifying and neutralizing the suspect potentially prevented further tragedy, as a semiautomatic rifle was discovered inside Nash’s home. The motive behind Nash’s actions, particularly why he chose the splash pad as the target, remains unclear.
Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett expressed profound sadness over the incident, highlighting the community’s vulnerability in the face of such violence.
