CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — The two victims in a North Carolina plane crash have been identified as flight instructor McMillan Abernathy and student Justin Strauss.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that a single-engine Piper PA-28, with Abernathy and Strauss on board, crashed near Siler City Municipal Airport.
State troopers say the crash occurred at around 1:28 p.m. on Friday as the pair were traveling from Raleigh Executive Airport in Sanford to the Siler City Municipal Airport in Chatham County. The plane crashed in a wooded area near the Siler City Airport.
After the crash, state troopers secured the scene and additional emergency responders searched for the occupants of the plane. Tragically, Abernathy and Strauss did not survive the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the cause of the crash, but no further information is available at this time.
