Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A suspect was fatally shot in a tumultuous incident in Maine during the early hours of Saturday morning, as confirmed by local law enforcement.

Reports indicate that multiple residences were engulfed in flames, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order while they pursued 43-year-old Leein Hinkley.

“It has been a harrowing and tragic morning here in Auburn. Situations like the one we witnessed today are incredibly alarming for our community,” stated Deputy Chief Tim Cougle of the Auburn Police Department.

Residents in the vicinity echoed similar sentiments.

“It was undeniably distressing,” expressed Nathan Goyette, a resident of Auburn.

According to police, a woman made a distress call to emergency services from Russell at approximately 1 a.m., reporting a confrontation between her partner and an individual later identified as Hinkley, who was attempting to break into their residence. The whereabouts of the woman’s partner remain unknown.

During the call, dispatchers heard gunshots and the woman managed to escape, with officers locating her in close proximity to the property.

Simultaneously, a property in the area caught fire, with investigators revealing that Hinkley began firing at the responding officers. Subsequently, a second residence on the street also caught ablaze.

Law enforcement detailed that Hinkley fled, initially seeking refuge in a garage before moving to a nearby rooftop.

“While on the rooftop, he brandished a firearm,” Cougle stated.

Several hours later, at around 5:30 a.m., the Maine State Police Swat Team approached the rooftop.

“Shortly thereafter, Hinkley was shot and killed by members of the Maine State Police Tactical Team. Troopers Scott Duff and Patrick Hall were involved in the officer-involved shooting,” disclosed Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police.

Both troopers have been placed on administrative leave, with reports suggesting that they sustained injuries. However, the severity of their injuries remains undisclosed.

Throughout the chaos, neighbouring residents were advised to shelter in place for several hours.

“I am outraged that such an incident could occur in this area,” expressed Dylan Fry, who was visiting a friend in Auburn.

Auburn resident Danielle Philbrook described the events as “utterly bewildering.”

“We walk our dog down that street every day,” Philbrook remarked.

State authorities disclosed that Hinkley had been released on bail just three days prior. He had been in custody for a probation violation relating to a 2011 conviction for domestic violence and aggravated assault, as well as a recent arrest for another domestic violence offence.

“Initially, he was held without bail for a probation violation. Despite objections from the district attorney’s office, the court reduced his bail to £1500, with conditions such as house arrest at a residence in Lewiston,” Ross conveyed.

For some, the incident evoked memories of recent distressing events.

“It is incredibly terrifying, especially given recent occurrences. Lewiston Strong,” Fry remarked.

Authorities have confirmed that the 911 caller’s partner is still being sought, although there is no longer a threat to public safety.
