OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM/Gray News) – The peaceful atmosphere of a summer day was shattered for an Alabama family when a fun-filled activity turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Thursday.
Opelika police rushed to a local apartment complex in response to a distressing call about a possible drowning. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a small child, identified as 5-year-old Kyrie Jefferson, unresponsive.
Despite the valiant efforts of first responders who performed CPR on Kyrie, the young boy tragically did not survive.
Speaking about the devastating loss, Kyrie’s mother, Keiasha Bulger, expressed profound grief over the untimely passing of her beloved son.
Recollecting fond memories, Bulger described Kyrie as a child brimming with joy and love. “He was sweet and affectionate. Every morning, he would shower me with love and compliments, reminding me of my beauty. His eyes radiated pure joy,” she shared.
Echoing Bulger’s sentiments, Kyrie’s Aunt, Tracie Chatmon, reminisced about the infectious smile that the young boy always wore. “Kyrie was a delightful child, always exuding happiness and spreading smiles around him,” Chatmon reflected.
Following the incident, Kyrie was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center, where he was sadly pronounced dead.
Expressing deep sorrow, Chatmon emphasised the importance of water safety for children during summer activities. “We will dearly miss Kyrie. His innocent desire to swim ended in tragedy. Water is not to be underestimated, especially when it comes to children,” she cautioned.
The entire family has been plunged into shock and mourning by Kyrie’s sudden passing. “Kyrie’s mother is grappling with the immense pain of losing her only child. We humbly request your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Chatmon appealed.
In a heartfelt plea to parents, the family urged caution and vigilance when children engage in swimming activities during the summer. “Ensure that a lifeguard is present and adequate supervision is in place to prevent any unforeseen accidents,” they advised.
