The incident unfolded in a plaza parking lot situated near Birchmount Road and Glendower Circuit, just south of Finch Avenue East. Disturbing footage from the scene indicates that the shooting transpired in front of a convenience store, sending shockwaves throughout the community.
Law enforcement officials from the Toronto Police Service were alerted to the area shortly before 2 p.m. after multiple individuals dialed emergency services to report a shooting in progress. The victim, later identified as 16-year-old Kayelin Rider-Downey from Toronto, was rushed to a nearby medical facility with critical injuries. Tragically, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after arriving at the hospital, becoming the city’s 37th homicide victim of the year.
