Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Talks About Hosting G7 Summit in Canada

Apulia (Canada): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently made a statement regarding the upcoming G7 Summit in 2025, which will be hosted by Canada during its presidency. Speaking to reporters, Trudeau expressed his excitement about the event and the opportunity to collaborate with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other G7 partners on various global issues.

When asked about the possibility of inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit in 2025, Trudeau emphasized the current focus on Italy’s presidency of the G7 and the ongoing discussions with G7 partners. He mentioned that more details about the 2025 Summit would be shared when Canada assumes the G7 Presidency next year.

The recent G7 summit took place in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13-15, where India participated as an ‘Outreach Country’ alongside the seven member countries and the European Union. The next G7 Leaders’ Summit is scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta province of Canada in 2025.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in Italy, Trudeau announced on social media, “Just announced: The next @G7 Leaders’ Summit will be hosted here in Canada — in Kananaskis, Alberta — in 2025.” This meeting marked the first interaction between the two leaders amidst strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada.

Prime Minister Modi also shared about the meeting on social media, stating, “Met Canadian PM @JustinTrudeau at the G7 Summit.” Tensions between the two nations arose after Trudeau’s accusations regarding the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada by alleged “agents of the Indian government.” India refuted these claims as baseless and motivated.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, designated as a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020, was fatally shot outside a Gurdwara in Surrey last year. India has requested specific evidence from Canada regarding the case, but no substantial information has been provided thus far.

Recently, Canadian authorities arrested a fourth suspect, Amandeep Singh, in connection with Nijjar’s killing. Singh, an Indian national, was already in custody for unrelated firearms charges. This arrest follows the apprehension of three other Indian nationals charged with first-degree murder in relation to the homicide.

Indian Response to Canadian Allegations

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the allegations made by Canada, emphasizing the need for concrete evidence to support any claims of Indian involvement in the case. He stated that while India remains open to cooperation in investigations, no substantial evidence implicating Indian nationals has been received.

Jaishankar’s remarks came in response to ongoing developments in the Nijjar case, including recent arrests and investigations by Canadian authorities. The Indian government continues to seek clarity and cooperation from Canada in addressing the matter.

As the G7 Summit approaches in 2025, the focus remains on international collaboration, addressing global challenges, and fostering diplomatic relationships among member nations. Canada’s role as the host country for the Summit presents an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and cooperation on key issues affecting the global community.
