Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Jerusalem (AP) — An explosion in southern Gaza resulted in the tragic death of eight Israeli soldiers, making it the deadliest attack on Israeli forces in months, the military confirmed on Saturday.

The incident, occurring more than eight months into an ongoing conflict, is likely to intensify calls for a cease-fire by Israeli demonstrators. The attack also comes amid widespread public dissatisfaction over exemptions from military service granted to young ultra-Orthodox men.

Following a cross-border attack by Hamas and other militants on October 7, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of 250 others, Israel launched an air and ground invasion of Gaza. The Israeli offensive has led to the loss of over 37,000 Palestinian lives, according to local health officials. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached critical levels, with over 80% of the population displaced and facing hunger due to Israeli restrictions and ongoing hostilities.

The explosion took place in Rafah, a southern city identified as Hamas’ last major stronghold by Israel. Ground troops were deployed to the city in early May, with no clear timeline for the operation’s conclusion.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, stating, “They knew they might have to sacrifice their lives, but they did it so we could live in this country. I salute them and hug their families.”

Shooting at splash pad in Detroit suburb injures 9, including 2 children. An 8-year-old is critical

Rochester Hills, Mich. (AP) — A shooter opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb, leaving nine people injured, including an 8-year-old boy in critical condition. Law enforcement authorities tracked down the suspect to a home, where the individual died by suicide.

Authorities initially reported up to 10 individuals with gunshot wounds from the incident, but revised the number after confirming with area hospitals. Among the victims were at least two children, with the 8-year-old boy sustaining a head injury and his 4-year-old brother wounded in the leg but in stable condition. Their mother remains in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen and leg.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard provided updates during a nighttime news conference, stating that the other six victims, all aged 30 or older, are in stable condition. The victims include a husband-and-wife couple and a 78-year-old man.

The shooting occurred at a city park featuring a recreation area with water sprays and fountains, providing a refuge for families to escape the summer heat. Bouchard noted that the attack appeared to be random, as the shooter arrived at the park, approached the splash pad, and fired multiple rounds, reloading several times.

Trump blasts immigrants for taking jobs as he courts voters at a Black church, MAGA event in Detroit

Detroit (AP) — Former President Donald Trump criticized immigrants for taking jobs and resources from Americans during separate events targeting Black voters and conservative activists in battleground Michigan on Saturday.

Trump reiterated baseless claims about the nation’s voting system while addressing supporters at a Black church and a convention hall filled with conservative activists. His remarks on illegal immigration, a recurring theme in his speeches, resonated with the crowd as he accused immigrants of causing harm to the Black and Hispanic populations.

“The people coming across the border — all those millions of people — they’re inflicting tremendous harm to our Black population and to our Hispanic population,” Trump stated to a cheering audience.

He later referred to members of violent immigrant gangs as “animals,” further highlighting his stance on immigration issues.

Trump challenges Biden to a cognitive test but confuses the name of the doctor who tested him

Washington (AP) — Former President Donald Trump suggested that President Joe Biden should undergo a cognitive test, momentarily confusing the name of the doctor who conducted his own test during a speech at a convention in Detroit on Saturday.

Trump referred to Texas Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson, the White House physician during his presidency, as “Ronny Johnson” while questioning Biden’s mental acuity. He emphasized the need for a cognitive test similar to the one he took, praising Jackson for declaring him the healthiest president in history.

Ronny Jackson, now a congressman from Texas, has been a vocal supporter of Trump and his policies on Capitol Hill.
