The town police in Charsadda, Pakistan, have successfully thwarted the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man, as reported by ARY News. The groom, identified as Habib Khan, was arrested along with the person conducting the marriage ceremony. However, the girl’s father, Alam Syed, who had agreed to sell his daughter to the elderly man for PKR 500,000, managed to evade authorities just before the wedding.

Legal Action Taken Against Perpetrators

Authorities have filed charges against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old groom, and the officiant under the Child Marriage Act in Pakistan. Despite the laws in place to prevent such atrocities, cases of child marriage continue to surface in the country.

On May 6, police in Swat arrested a 70-year-old man for marrying a 13-year-old girl. The girl’s father had arranged the marriage, but police intervened in time to prevent the union. Both the groom and the father were taken into custody, along with the officiant and witnesses of the marriage. The minor girl was then taken to a hospital for a medical examination.

Urgent Need for Stricter Enforcement

These incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws against child marriage in Pakistan. It is essential for authorities to crack down on such practices to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
