In a disturbing incident in Charsadda town, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police successfully intervened to prevent the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man. According to reports by ARY News, the groom, identified as Habib Khan, was arrested by law enforcement officials just before the ‘Nikkah’ ceremony was to take place.

The girl’s father, Alam Syed, had allegedly agreed to sell his daughter to the elderly man for a sum of PKR 500,000. Fortunately, the police were able to step in before the illegal marriage could be solemnised. However, Alam Syed managed to escape from the scene before he could be apprehended.

Following the incident, a case has been registered against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old groom, and the ‘Nikah Khwan’ under the Child Marriage Act. This legislation aims to prevent such exploitative practices and protect the rights of minors in Pakistan.

Despite the existence of laws against child marriage, instances of such heinous acts continue to occur in the country. Recent reports have highlighted similar cases in regions like Rajanpur and Thatta, where young girls were forcibly being married off to significantly older men.
