ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Charsadda town, Pakistan, successfully thwarted an alarming attempt to marry off a 12-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man. The police intervened just in time to prevent the illegal union from taking place, ultimately leading to the arrest of the elderly groom, identified as Habib Khan, and the marriage officiant, known as the ‘Nikah Khwan’.
The distressing incident unfolded when the girl’s father, Alam Syed, agreed to sell his young daughter to the elderly man for a sum of PKR 500,000. Fortunately, law enforcement agencies were alerted to the situation and swiftly moved to prevent the marriage from occurring. While the groom and the ‘Nikah Khwan’ were apprehended, the girl’s father managed to escape from the scene.
Following the incident, legal action has been taken against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old man, and the marriage officiant under the Child Marriage Act. Despite the existence of laws aimed at curbing such practices, instances of child marriage persist in Pakistan, posing a significant challenge to authorities.
Continued Incidents of Child Marriage
Regrettably, this incident in Charsadda is not an isolated one. Similar cases of forced child marriages have been reported in various parts of Pakistan recently. In Rajanpur, Punjab, law enforcement agencies intervened to prevent the marriage of an 11-year-old girl to a 40-year-old man, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue.
Similarly, in Thatta, a young girl was rescued from an unwanted marriage to a 50-year-old landlord, thanks to the prompt action of the police. These distressing incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger enforcement of laws against child marriage in the country.
Recent Arrests in Swat
In a separate incident in Swat, a 70-year-old man was arrested for marrying a 13-year-old girl with the consent of her father. Upon receiving information about the illegal union, the police sprang into action, apprehending both the groom and the girl’s father. Additionally, the marriage officiant and witnesses were also taken into custody, while the minor girl was sent for a medical examination to ensure her well-being.
These alarming cases serve as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges posed by child marriage in Pakistan and the critical need for concerted efforts to protect vulnerable children from such exploitation and abuse.
