The girl’s father, Alam Syed, had allegedly agreed to sell his daughter to the elderly man for PKR 500,000.
Upon receiving information about the illegal marriage, law enforcement officers intervened and apprehended the groom and the ‘Nikah Khwan’, the person responsible for solemnizing the marriage. However, the girl’s father managed to escape the scene before he could be apprehended.
Following the incident, a case has been registered against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old groom, and the ‘Nikah Khwan’ under the Child Marriage Act. Despite the existence of laws prohibiting child marriage in Pakistan, such incidents continue to occur, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of young girls.
This is not the first time such a case has been reported in the country. Similar attempts to force young girls into marriage with much older men have been thwarted by authorities in other regions as well. In Rajanpur and Thatta, law enforcement agencies intervened to prevent underage girls from being married off to elderly men.
In one instance, an 11-year-old girl in Rajanpur, Punjab, was almost married to a 40-year-old man before the police intervened. Similarly, in Thatta, a young girl was forcibly married to a 50-year-old landlord, but fortunately, she was rescued in time by the police.
On a separate occasion in Swat, a 70-year-old man was arrested for marrying a 13-year-old girl with the consent of her father. The police acted swiftly upon receiving information about the illegal marriage and apprehended the groom, the father of the minor girl, the ‘Nikkah Khwan’, and the witnesses to the ceremony.
The minor girl was taken to a hospital for a medical examination, highlighting the grave consequences and risks associated with child marriage. It is imperative for authorities to enforce existing laws and take proactive measures to protect vulnerable children from such exploitative practices.
