An explosion in southern Gaza has tragically resulted in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers, marking the deadliest attack on the country’s forces in months, the military confirmed on Saturday.
The incident, occurring more than eight months into a prolonged conflict, is expected to intensify calls from Israeli citizens for a ceasefire. This comes at a time when the government is facing widespread discontent over exemptions from military service for young ultra-Orthodox men.
Israel’s military response to an October 7 cross-border attack by Hamas and other militants, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 individuals and resulted in 250 being taken hostage, led to an air and ground invasion of Gaza. According to local health officials, more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes and ground assaults, with no distinction made between civilians and combatants.
The explosion occurred in Rafah, a southern city identified as Hamas’ last major stronghold by Israel. Ground troops were deployed to the city in early May, and there is no clear indication of when the operation will conclude.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifice for the nation. “They knew they might have to sacrifice their lives, but they did it so we could live in this country. I salute them and embrace their families,” Katz stated in a social media post.
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an Israeli military spokesman, revealed that the explosion occurred in the Tal al Sultan area of Rafah shortly after 5 a.m. It was determined to have been caused by either an explosive device planted by Hamas or an anti-tank missile.
President Biden recently introduced a ceasefire proposal aimed at securing the release of around 120 remaining hostages in Gaza and ending the conflict. While the international community has largely supported the plan, both Israel and Hamas have expressed reservations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his commitment to dismantling Hamas’ military and governance infrastructure before considering a ceasefire.
The war has divided Israeli society, with significant public demonstrations urging the government to negotiate the safe return of hostages. Concerns are mounting as more than 40 hostages held by Hamas have been declared deceased, with fears of further casualties if the situation persists.
Following the deadly explosion, Netanyahu’s coalition faced criticism for extending exemptions from the military draft for ultra-Orthodox men. The move sparked outcry amidst ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah along the northern border with Lebanon, resulting in over 600 Israeli military casualties since October 7.
The Israeli Supreme Court recently ruled against government subsidies for non-serving ultra-Orthodox men, prompting the need for new draft legislation. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, a vocal advocate for equal societal contributions during wartime, opposed the legislation within Netanyahu’s coalition.
Amidst calls for new elections and the release of hostages, demonstrations against the government have gained momentum. Protesters are calling for change to avert further loss of life and push for political reform.
Additionally, violent incidents have escalated in the West Bank amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict. A 16-year-old Palestinian was fatally shot by Israeli forces near Nablus, with conflicting accounts of the circumstances leading to the incident.
As the situation continues to unfold, the need for diplomatic solutions and efforts to mitigate further bloodshed remain paramount.
