In a shocking incident that unfolded in a Tampa neighborhood late Saturday night, 19-year-old Christos Alexander allegedly shot and killed his parents before turning his weapon on responding deputies, resulting in the injury of one.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 14000 block of Cactus Wren Place around 11:09 PM after receiving a distress call from a woman reporting that her husband had been shot. The call was punctuated by the sound of multiple gunshots in the background.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered the caller and the suspect, Alexander, outside the residence. Tragically, Alexander proceeded to shoot his mother before opening fire on the deputies. In response, five deputies returned fire, causing Alexander to retreat back into the house.
A standoff ensued, prompting the deployment of HCSO’s SWAT, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and Crisis Negotiation teams to the scene. Despite their efforts, when the specialized units entered the residence, they discovered Alexander deceased from his injuries.
Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned Alexander’s actions, describing him as a “monster” responsible for the deaths of his parents and the injury of a deputy. He commended the swift response of the deputies, acknowledging that their actions likely saved the lives of other residents in the neighborhood.
The injured deputy, Shane McGough, 26, is currently in stable condition. The other deputies involved in the shooting have been identified as Brandon Schade, Richard Ziegler, Bjar Atkins, and Ciara Moncada. None of them had any prior record of using deadly force.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has initiated an investigation into the shooting in accordance with HCSO policy.
