Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident unfolded in Bridgeport early Saturday morning, resulting in the death of a grandmother and the injury of her granddaughter after their home was deliberately set on fire. According to reports from both police and media outlets, the horrifying event took place just before 2:30 a.m. when an individual threw an “incendiary device” through the window of a rowhouse apartment in the 3100 block of South Green Street in Chicago.

The apartment quickly became engulfed in flames, prompting a swift response from the Chicago Fire Department. Firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze, utilizing three hose lines to bring the situation under control. Tragically, a 54-year-old woman, identified as Charnette Walker, lost her life in the fire. Her 12-year-old granddaughter was rescued from the burning building and rushed to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition.

Heartbreakingly, Walker, the grandmother, heroically instructed two neighbours to save her “grandbaby” before attempting to rescue herself. The two courageous teens, Nova Miles and Jayshawn Owens, alerted the police at the nearby Deering (9th) District police station before rushing to the scene to help. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save Walker but managed to rescue the young girl from a second-floor bathroom amidst heavy smoke.

The suspect, dressed in all black, was spotted fleeing the scene northwards through a back alley, leaving devastation in their wake. The Chicago Fire Department released a photo showing the extensive damage caused by the fire, with the apartment’s contents strewn onto the sidewalk.

The investigation into this heinous crime has been handed over to the police, with no suspects currently in custody. Detectives are actively working to gather information and bring the perpetrator to justice. The fatal arson incident occurred at a subsidised apartment complex owned by the Chicago Housing Authority.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community support and vigilance in the face of such senseless acts of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones affected by this devastating loss.
