Having been in a similar position myself not too long ago, I can relate to the internal conflict and confusion that can arise from trying to hide one’s true identity.

The concept of compulsory heterosexuality, or comphet, is prevalent among queer youth in today’s heteronormative society. Many LGBTQ+ individuals find themselves grappling with societal pressures, familial expectations, and internalized beliefs that can make it challenging to embrace their true selves.

Growing up in a South Asian household where arranged marriages and traditional gender roles were emphasized, I felt the weight of cultural expectations from an early age. Additionally, living in a conservative town where queer youth faced discrimination only added to the internal struggle.

Reflecting on my teenage years, I found myself in relationships with men that I wasn’t truly attracted to, all while grappling with my own identity and desires.

Embracing Identity Through Music and Representation

It wasn’t until I moved to a more accepting environment and discovered artists like Chappell Roan and Reneé Rapp that I began to embrace my identity as a lesbian.

Reneé Rapp’s portrayal of a lesbian Regina George in the “Mean Girls” musical remake and her own coming out journey served as a source of inspiration and validation for me. It showed me that it’s okay to evolve and redefine one’s identity as we grow and learn more about ourselves.

Listening to “Good Luck Babe” and its candid exploration of comphet was a turning point for me. It helped me shed the layers of internalized homophobia and embrace my identity without fear or hesitation.

Celebrating Pride and Self-Acceptance

As I attended events like Coachella and proudly waved a lesbian flag, I felt a sense of liberation and empowerment that I had never experienced before.

Unlearning the toxic beliefs and expectations that had held me back for so long, I finally felt comfortable and confident in identifying as a lesbian.

With Pride Month upon us, I look back on my journey with gratitude and celebrate the strides I have made in accepting and loving myself for who I truly am.

I hope that the TikTok creator who sparked this reflection finds the courage and support to explore her own identity and embrace her truth, just as I have done.
