A shocking incident has occurred in Ondo, Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, where a 45-year-old woman, identified as Abiodun, set her 86-year-old mother ablaze.
The tragic incident resulted in the death of the elderly woman, who was believed to be the cause of her daughter’s misfortunes, leading to the horrific act of setting her on fire.
An eyewitness revealed that the suspect arrived at her mother’s house on Friday and proceeded to douse her with petrol before igniting the flames that engulfed her.
The motive behind the heinous crime remains unclear, but the suspect has been apprehended by the Enu-Owa division of the police.
In a chilling confession, the perpetrator stated that a spiritualist had informed her that her mother was responsible for her troubles, prompting her to take drastic action.
She recounted, “I went to my mother’s house at 4.00 am and waited outside. When she emerged at 5.00 am, I poured petrol on her and set her on fire.”
The suspect further elaborated, “A pastor and a woman both confirmed that my mother was the source of my suffering. I was advised that only by eliminating her could I break free from my afflictions.”
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state police command, Mrs Funmi Odunlami, affirmed the incident and assured that the suspect would face legal consequences for her actions.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of superstition and the consequences of acting on unfounded beliefs.
