Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The University of Nottingham has announced that a rare protoichthyosaurus fossil, dating back to the Jurassic era, will soon be on display after being hidden away in storage for nearly 30 years. The dolphin-like swimming reptile, which was previously unknown to science, was identified as a new species in 2017 by visiting palaeontologist Dean Lomax.

Rediscovery of a Prehistoric Treasure

The protoichthyosaurus had been used for teaching purposes before it was forgotten and left to gather dust in a university storeroom. It wasn’t until Lomax’s groundbreaking research that the true significance of the fossil was recognized. Further studies revealed that this specimen was the first of its kind ever discovered.

A Major Step in Evolutionary Understanding

Dr. Thomas Hartman, the keeper of the university’s zoology collection, described the protoichthyosaurus as a crucial piece in the puzzle of prehistoric marine life. With its fish-like tail and dorsal fin resembling that of a shark or dolphin, the fossil provides valuable insights into the evolution of marine reptiles.

A New Home for an Ancient Resident

The protoichthyosaurus has now found a permanent residence at Nottingham’s Natural History Museum in Wollaton Hall, where it will be part of an upcoming exhibition on prehistoric creatures. Dr. Hartman emphasized the importance of showcasing the fossil to the public, ensuring its preservation and accessibility for future generations.

The Journey to Display

Transporting the fossil to its new home was no easy task, given its size and weight. The specimen, embedded in a heavy slab of Victorian plaster, required careful handling by a team of experts to ensure its safe arrival at the museum. Visitors can look forward to seeing the protoichthyosaurus on display at the Discovering Dinosaurs gallery later this year.
