Accident – Death – Obituary News : Jaipur: A tragic incident unfolded in Kota, Rajasthan, as a 17-year-old student, who was diligently preparing for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to secure admission in undergraduate engineering courses, allegedly took his own life on Saturday, as reported by the local police.

The Mahaveer Nagar station house officer (SHO), Mahendra Maroo, revealed that the young student was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his paying guest (PG) accommodation. The distressing discovery was made by his concerned friends who had gone to check on him after he failed to emerge from his room for an extended period. Upon receiving no response, his friends promptly notified the PG owner and the authorities, prompting the police to rush to the scene and retrieve the lifeless body by forcibly gaining entry into the room.

This heartbreaking incident marks the eleventh suicide in the coaching hub this year alone, underscoring the immense pressure and mental health challenges faced by students in pursuit of academic excellence. Last year, a staggering 27 students preparing for various competitive examinations tragically ended their lives in the district.

The deceased student, hailing from Bihar, had been enrolled in a coaching centre in Kota for approximately two years. According to the police, the student had previously attempted suicide earlier in the year, indicating a pattern of distress and emotional turmoil.

“The deceased had likely made an attempt at the JEE earlier this year, although this detail is yet to be confirmed,” mentioned Maroo.

Following the necessary legal procedures, the body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and the parents of the deceased were duly notified. Remarkably, no suicide note was found at the scene.

Maroo highlighted that an investigation would be launched to determine why the hostel had not complied with the district administration’s directive to install spring-loaded fans, a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding students’ mental well-being. Any contravention of the guidelines by the PG authority would prompt further scrutiny and disciplinary action.

Against the backdrop of mounting student suicides, the district administration had mandated on August 18 that all hostels and PG accommodations must equip rooms with spring-loaded fans to bolster students’ mental health and security. Notably, this regulation does not extend to apartment complexes.

Kota stands as the epicentre of India’s test-preparation industry, boasting an estimated annual worth of ₹10,000 crore. Students from across the nation flock to Kota post Class X to enrol in residential test-prep institutes and schools primarily geared towards certification.

In times of crisis or emotional distress, it is crucial to seek support from mental health professionals.
