A 27-year-old Afghan national, identified as Soufian T., was shot dead by police after a violent rampage that resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries. The attack occurred on Friday evening during celebrations for the UEFA European Football Championship.

Arrest and Attack Details

According to the authorities, Soufian T. attacked a 23-year-old acquaintance who was also from Afghanistan with a “knife-like object” in his apartment before the dispute started. After being stabbed several times, the victim was able to escape and into the stairway, where he eventually passed away. The next morning, when they found his death, the police cordoned off the area and started their investigation, according to Daily Mail.

Rampage and Police Response

With a 10 cm blade covered in blood, Soufian T. left the scene after the initial attack. He reportedly raced toward Genossenschaftsweg Street, where residents were congregated to watch the Scotland vs. Germany football game, according to witnesses. When he got to a neighboring allotment, he started threatening individuals and barging into a house party to start hitting people at random.

A 50-year-old lady was stabbed in the chest, while a 75-year-old man was wounded twice in the back. They were sent to the hospital right away after suffering severe injuries. Before leaving the area once more, the attacker hurled a table at a different visitor, the Daily Mail reported.

Confrontation and Shooting

Police swiftly responded to the distress calls. Upon locating Soufian T., he attempted to attack the officers with the same weapon. In response, two officers shot him twice in the head, leading to his immediate incapacitation. Soufian T. was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Ongoing Investigation and Security Measures

Following the incident, Wolmirstedt is part of Saxony-Anhalt, whose Interior Ministry has increased police presence across the state. It’s yet unclear if the incident is being investigated in connection with terrorism. More border checks and security measures have been put in place by the authorities, particularly in light of the upcoming UEFA European Football Championship, which is being held in German cities through July 14, the publication reported.

Previous Incidents and Security Concerns

This assault comes after a spate of violent incidents, such as the fatal stabbing of a police officer in Mannheim last month by an Afghan asylum seeker. During an anti-Islamization event, the suspect in that case—named Sulaiman A.—targeted law enforcement. The implicated police officer was said to be in serious condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

Germany announced strict security measures, including border restrictions, in March to guard against possible threats during the football event, including cyberattacks, hooliganism, and Islamic terrorism. Although there are no known specific intentions to target the event, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that the government is fully committed to preparing for every possible threat, Mail Online reported.
