The Madhya Pradesh Police made two arrests on Friday after “body parts of a bovine animal” were discovered on the premises of a temple in Jaora town, Ratlam district. According to a report by The Indian Express, the local administration also demolished “illegal” portions of the suspects’ houses.

An officer stated that the animal parts were identified as cow meat. The two individuals taken into custody were named as Salman Mevati, aged 24, and Shaqir Qureshi, aged 19. They were charged with “hurting religious sentiments.”

The incident came to light when the priest of the temple, Gaurav Puri Goswami, noticed the animal parts and alerted the police at 3 am on Friday. Deputy Inspector-General Manoj Kumar Singh mentioned that “two bike-borne miscreants threw body parts of a bovine animal on the temple premises.”

Following an investigation, the police apprehended Mevati and Qureshi under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Ratlam Superintendent of Police Rakesh Khaka revealed that the incident occurred on June 14 at 2.41 am. He stated, “Two bike-borne men threw cow meat inside the temple premises.”

Residents of the area gathered in protest against the incident. Singh noted that there were attempts to disrupt the peace in the town, but prompt action prevented the situation from escalating.

Chief Minister Urges for Calm

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav issued a public appeal for peace in response to the incident. He instructed the police and local authorities to take strict measures against those involved in the act.

Local qazi Hafeez Bhuru condemned the incident and called on residents to refrain from making inflammatory statements on social media. He emphasised that the culprit, regardless of their religion, should face severe consequences for their actions.

The Madhya Pradesh Congress chief, Jitu Patwari, also denounced the incident and demanded a thorough investigation. He urged the state government to mete out harsh punishment to those responsible for spreading discord in society.
