EDINBURG, Texas — A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening in rural Edinburg, Texas, as deputies were forced to take lethal action against a man who allegedly posed a threat to his wife and law enforcement officers.

At 6:24 p.m. on June 11, 2024, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Communications Division received a distressing 911 call from a woman who reported that her father-in-law had attacked her mother-in-law with a knife. Deputies swiftly responded to the scene located in the 6600 block of West Drive to address the urgent situation involving an aggravated assault of family violence.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man identified as 51-year-old Ruben Ollarzabal Chairez, who was wielding a knife and blatantly disregarding commands to drop the weapon. Despite efforts to subdue Chairez using non-lethal methods such as a Taser and rubber shotgun rounds, he persisted in his resistance. The situation escalated when Chairez aggressively lunged at the deputies and threw the knife in their direction, prompting the officers to use their firearms, resulting in his fatal injury.

Following the altercation, deputies immediately administered life-saving measures to Chairez until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on the scene. Tragically, Chairez was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Andre Maldonado at 7:00 p.m. An autopsy was subsequently ordered to ascertain the cause of death.

Investigations into the incident revealed that Chairez had previously made threats to harm his wife and had a prior arrest related to family violence in February 2024. In response to the shooting, the HCSO Officer-Involved Shooting Team, in conjunction with Major Crime Investigators and Crime Scene Specialists, meticulously processed the scene for evidence collection.

As standard procedure, all five deputies involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal review to ensure compliance with departmental protocols and procedures.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to any witnesses with relevant information about the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Witnesses can contact the HCSO directly at 956-383-8114 or choose to remain anonymous by providing information through the Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers Hotline at 956-668-TIPS (8477).
