RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – An Augusta man has been taken into custody after allegedly setting fire to two residences in a disturbing incident that unfolded on Kissingbower Road.

Incident Details

According to the official report, deputies were dispatched to the scene following a domestic disturbance call. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers were met with a blazing inferno that had engulfed household items such as a couch, clothes, and pillows. The fire had spread from one residence to another, causing extensive damage.

Authorities identified the suspect as Rodney Allen Phinezy, 42, who was spotted at the top of a staircase. Despite initial resistance, Phinezy was eventually apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Eye Witness Account

A witness recounted seeing Phinezy hurling various items off the staircase, including fueling the flames by adding more items to the fire. The witness also observed the female victim, identified as Phinezy’s wife, fleeing the scene on foot.

The witness provided crucial video evidence to deputies, capturing Phinezy’s destructive actions. The footage showed Phinezy exacerbating the fire by tossing items onto the flames, resulting in extensive damage to both residences and personal belongings.

Extent of Damage

The fire caused significant harm to the properties, including the air conditioning unit, rear exterior wall, front residential staircase, and other valuable items. The neighbouring resident, who was also impacted by the fire, confirmed the witness’s account of Phinezy’s reckless behaviour.

Legal Action

Following a thorough investigation, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office arrested Phinezy on two charges of first-degree arson. He was subsequently booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Thursday, June 13th.

Authorities emphasised that the damage inflicted on the residences and personal property was done without the owners’ consent, demonstrating the seriousness of Phinezy’s actions.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the destructive consequences of arson and the importance of swift and decisive law enforcement action in protecting the community.
