Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet my grandmother Browning, as she passed away before I was born. However, I have fond memories of spending time with Pop Browning, who we shared a home with. My grandparents, MamMaw and PapPaw Junkin, also lived nearby, and we saw them frequently.

Now, my husband David and I are dedicated to creating wonderful memories with our three grandchildren. We had some practice with a special group of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Growing up, we listened to the radio, eagerly awaited the mailman’s arrival, and shared an eight-party phone line. Today, our grandchildren can easily connect with us through FaceTime, sharing their achievements and special moments. Poppy, our nickname for David, is currently encouraging our grandson J.D. to spend less time on his iPad and explore the world around us.

Exploring Nature with Your Grandchildren

One of the best ways to bond with young children is by exploring nature together. Take your grandchild by the hand and stroll around the yard, pointing out different colours and shapes. Engage them in a game of “I Spy,” encouraging them to identify colours or shapes in the environment. Guide them to feel the textures of grass against the concrete sidewalk and introduce them to various scents in the garden.

Encourage your grandchildren to listen to the birds singing, watch butterflies and bees, and immerse themselves in nature. By exposing them to the wonders of the natural world, you can instil a love and appreciation for the environment.

Learning Through Field Trips

Take your grandchild on a field trip to the grocery store to expand their vocabulary. Introduce them to a variety of vegetables and fruits, such as asparagus, broccoli, zucchini, and avocadoes. Challenge them to pick out a new food item to taste and prepare together.

Visiting local attractions like farmers’ markets can also be a fun and educational experience. The Hitching Lot Farmers’ Market, open from now until October, is a great place to explore and learn more about fresh produce. You may even spot some of the dedicated Lowndes County Master Gardeners there.

The Importance of Pollinators

Teaching children about pollinators is essential for their understanding of the natural world. Bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects play a crucial role in pollinating plants and crops. By observing pollinators in your neighbourhood, you can help children appreciate the importance of these tiny creatures.

For a unique learning experience, consider visiting sites like Carlsbad Caverns, where you can witness bats in action. Bats are important pollinators for many fruit-bearing plants, including nuts, figs, and cacao, the main ingredient in chocolate.

Planting Seeds of Knowledge

Encourage your grandchildren to plant seeds of knowledge by exploring the natural world and learning about different plants and pollinators. By fostering a love for nature and gardening, you may inspire future botanists, horticulturists, or farmers.

As a former elementary teacher and passionate gardener, I believe that educating the younger generation about the environment is essential for their well-being and the health of our ecosystem. Let’s continue to explore, learn, and grow together with our grandchildren.
